• John Throop President

    Dr. Throop is a 1993 graduate from The University of Michigan and a 1998 graduate of the Wayne State University School of Medicine.  He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at The University of Virginia and served as Chief Resident in his final year.  Joining ECS in 2001, Dr. Throop was involved early on in physician leadership with service on the Board of Directors of ECS, Medical Management Specialists, and the Michigan Professional Insurance Exchange.  He furthered his education with completion of a Master of Business Administration with a Healthcare focus from The George Washington University in 2017.  Dr. Throop currently serves as the President of ECS, Vice Chair of the Michigan Professional Insurance Exchange, and Board Member of a number of healthcare organizations.  He is a multi-time Ironman Triathlon finisher, enjoys camping, hiking, collecting medical antiques, and watching his daughters perform ballet and jump horses. 

  • Tammy Munger Chief Financial Officer/Chief Operating Officer

    When it comes to bean counting and keeping ECS's finances in order, Tammy is a pro.  As a key member of the executive team, she assumes a strategic role in the overall management of ECS.  Whether it's assisting with new contract negotiations, implementing financial policies or overseeing the annual budget process, Tammy manages the money stuff with detail-oriented ease and confidence. Her day to day duties include managing the accounting and finance functions, issuing financial statements and reports, and communicating with officers and outside consultants regarding business strategies. Outside of ECS, Tammy enjoys spending time with her husband and four children. Favorite family activities include downhill skiing and vacations at the beach.

  • Chris Port Chief Medical Officer

    Dr. Port completed his BA in Political Science at the University of Michigan and MD at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 2002.  His residency was completed in 2005 at GRMEP/Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency Program in Grand Rapids MI. Dr. Port has served on the ECS Board since 2011 and was elected to the Executive Team as Treasurer in 2017.  From 2011 to 2017, Dr. Port served as the Zeeland Community Hospital Medical Director and the Ottawa County Assistant Medical Director.  He served a 2-year term as the Chief of Staff at Zeeland Community Hospital from 2016-2017 and was Vice Chief the 2 years prior. Dr. Port previously served as the Regional Chief Medical Officer of ECS before taking on the role of Chief Medical Officer.  When he isn't working, he enjoys building furniture in his wood shop, golf, cross country and road biking, running, and any other excuse to be outdoors.

  • John Verbrugge Vice President of Recruitment and Personnel

    Dr. Verbrugge was born in Grand Rapids and raised in West Michigan. After completing his undergraduate studies at University of Michigan, he attended Columbia University in NYC for his master’s degree. Dr. Verbrugge then returned to MSU-CHM for medical school before moving on to Toledo for residency training at St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He started working as an attending physician at Blodgett Hospital in 1995 and has worked at no less than 10 different hospitals over the years. Since the merger of ESGR with ECS in 2000, Dr. Verbrugge has served in various administrative roles for the group. Dr. Verbrugge considers himself most fortunate to have worked with so many outstanding individuals and is extremely proud of ECS and the group that they have become! His free time is spent with family and close friends...trying to stay healthy.

  • Don Powell Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management and Advocacy

    Dr. Powell is a 1990 graduate from Grand Valley State University and a 1996 graduate from Michigan State University - College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency in EM at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit and served as chief resident his final year. Since joining ECS in 2000, Dr. Powell has had roles in leadership, reimbursement, and advocacy. Currently, he is the President of Medical Management Specialists, a full cycle RCM company wholly owned by ECS. He is also a member of the ECS Executive Committee and Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management and Advocacy.  Dr. Powell holds board seats with Answer Health Physician Organization (AHPO) and the Emergency Department Practice Management Association (EDPMA).  His roles in advocacy have expanded to service on several EDPMA committees, including the Federal Health Policy Comm. (FHPC), State Regulatory Insurance Comm. (SRIC), Surprise Billing Advisory Comm., and the Finance Comm. Dr. Powell also serves on the Executive Committee and is the Chair Elect of EDPMA. His current work with ACEP includes Reimbursement Comm. Work Group 2.  Outside of work, Dr. Powell enjoys good food, good wine and good sport.

  • Todd Chassee Vice President of Clinical Services

    Dr. Chassee is a West Michigan native and was born at Blodgett Hospital.  He completed his undergraduate studies at Hope College before going on to attend the University of Michigan Medical School.  He returned to Grand Rapids in 2006 after serving as Chief Resident and completing his Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Pittsburgh.  His primary interests within Emergency Medicine are pre-hospital care, academics and alternative care models for Emergency Medicine.  He has served as medical director of KCEMS since 2007 and is active on multiple regional and state EMS committees.  Regarding his interest in academics, Dr. Chassee is an Associate Professor within the Department of Emergency Medicine at Michigan State University and has been a Core Faculty Member of the Emergency Medicine Residency since 2007.  Within ECS, he has served as a Board Member and is excited to further ECS development with his role as the VP of Clinical Services.  In Dr. Chassee's free time, he enjoys running and spending time with his wife and two boys.     

  • Jeremiah Johns Chief Information Officer

    Dr. Johns completed his BS in Biochemistry at Purdue University and MD at Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the Grand Rapids Medical Education Partners/Michigan State University Emergency Medicine Residency program in 2007. He has served on the ECS Board of Directors and Finance Committee since 2010.  Dr. Johns currently serves as the Executive Secretary of ECS  and the Chief Information Officer.  Dr. Johns served as the Executive Director of Answer Health On Demand, a Telehealth company formed by ECS. He enjoys outdoor activities including camping, riding dirt bikes and coaching his son’s lacrosse teams.

  • John Deveau Regional Chief Medical Officer

    Dr. Deveau has been with ECS since 2001.  He represents a divided house having earned his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, then his MPH from the University of Michigan.  After several years in industry with Amoco Oil Corporation, he returned to his go-green roots at the MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He completed his Emergency Medicine residency at the MSU-Sparrow program, serving as Chief Resident.  Over the years he has served ECS in a number of capacities.  These include previous Medical Director appointments for Spectrum Health Blodgett hospital, and Answer Health on Demand, an ECS-managed telemedicine service.  He has also served as an ECS Board member, is a former Vice-Chair for Emergency Medicine at Spectrum Health, and former ECS Compensation Committee Chair.  Clinical interests include rural emergency medicine and sedation.  Current responsibilities include regional campus oversight, business development, and advocacy.  Outside of work he’s an avid cyclist, enjoys his large extended families, and travels with his wife and 3 daughters.

  • Phillip Stawski Executive Director of Behavioral Health

    Dr. Phillip (Phil) Stawski is a dynamic and transformative healthcare leader with a special interest in behavioral health and emergency psychiatry. Dr. Stawski serves as Executive Director of Behavioral Health for Emergency Care Specialists as well as Vice Chief of Staff and Associate Medical Director of Emergency Services for Spectrum Health United and Kelsey Hospitals.  Dr. Stawski introduced and led a regional coalition of hospitals, psychiatric facilities, and community mental health agencies in the adoption of a standardize, evidence based medical clearance process for behavioral health patients. Given the success of this work, it was later adopted by the State of Michigan’s Psychiatric Care Improvement project as a best practice for medical clearance.  Additionally, Dr. Stawski has introduced the EmPATH emergency psychiatric care model to Spectrum Health, an integrated healthcare delivery system in West Michigan.  He is currently leading the development of an EmPATH unit at Spectrum Health to improve the care of patients presenting with an acute behavioral health emergency.

  • Michael Uhlig Chief of Advanced Practice Provider Services

    Mike is 1998 graduate of Calvin College and earned his M.S. in Medicine and completed PA school at Western Michigan University in 2002.  After beginning his emergency medicine career in Chattanooga Tennessee, Mike returned home to West Michigan and joined ECS in 2006.  He currently serves as the chief of APP services, which includes oversight and direction of a team of over 70 talented advanced practice providers.  He appreciates working with a group at ECS that is on the forefront of emergency medicine and who provide incredible support of APP practice.  When not working, he enjoys travel (preferably somewhere warm and sunny), baseball, boating, and spending time with his wife and four children. 

  • Stephanie Mullennix Director of Clinical Practice/Quality & Integration

    Stephanie completed her undergraduate nursing studies at Grand Valley State University and her Master of Science in Nursing from Michigan State University. Stephanie has over 18 years of experience in the emergency setting and is Board Certified as an Emergency Nurse and Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist. In previous professional roles, Stephanie gained experience in systems leadership, process improvement, change management, electronic health record design and the translation of evidence into practice. Stephanie is passionate about ensuring that individuals with emergent or urgent health care needs receive high-quality care. At ECS, Stephanie partners with physician leaders to develop, drive and implement evidence-based clinical projects and programs to improve quality outcomes for patients and clinicians.  In her free time, Stephanie enjoys spending time with her family, camping, boating and traveling.

  • Robin VanderHart Corporate Controller

    Robin VanderHart grew up in Grand Rapids and currently resides in Caledonia.  She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hope College in Business Administration/Accounting with an English minor and is an active Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA).  Robin has a dual role with ECS/MMS.  As the ECS Corporate Controller, she oversees the preparation of financial statements and budgets, implements control processes, mitigates risk, analyzes data, and works to protect the assets of ECS and its subsidiaries.  Across all sites, she is involved in data analytics and the development of Key Performance metrics.  Prior to working with ECS/MMS, Robin worked across multiple industries as a Controller/Consultant, which gives her great experience managing business operations.  Robin lives on a lake, so much summer free time is spent there with friends and family.  She also enjoys traveling, trying new restaurants, reading, and has an eclectic assortment of hobbies.  

  • Diana Baranoski Human Resource Manager

    With over 20 years of experience in Human Resource Management, Diana brings a wealth of knowledge to ECS. Some of her areas of expertise include talent acquisition, talent management, training, career development, and employee relations. Before ECS, Diana worked in both small entities and large corporations in a variety of industries outside of healthcare – non-profits, staffing agencies, manufacturing, and biotechnology. Diana has both a Bachelor of Arts from Spring Arbor University and a Master of Arts from Western Michigan University. Throughout her education, her major areas of study were Human Resource Development and Organizational Development. Diana prides herself in growing her professional network through her memberships with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Grand Rapids Human Resources Association (GRHRA). In her spare time, Diana enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading, and exercising. Diana especially treasures cooking Sunday dinners for her family and playing outdoor games or card games with them. She prepares gourmet meals for them utilizing her post-graduate education in Culinary Arts, where Diana learned to cook exotic meats like kangaroo and alligator as part of her International Cuisine course. 

  • Stacy Brewer Senior Payroll Administrator

    Stacy Brewer is ECS’s Senior Payroll Administrator. She received her Associate’s degree from Davenport Business College and has 20+ years of payroll experience. She has been a dedicated and loyal employee serving our providers for 10 years. She is responsible for processing the monthly payroll for our 260+ providers, as well as the bi-weekly payroll for our administrative staff. In addition to her payroll responsibilities, she also handles benefits administration and expense reimbursements. Stacy’s organization skills and great attention to detail allow her to excel in her role. She takes great pride in ensuring deadlines are met and is instrumental in generating solutions to problems that arise in her role. Stacy grew up and still lives in the Grand Rapids area. She is an avid dog lover and if you’re driving through the northeast side of Grand Rapids, you’ll probably see her out walking with her four-legged child, Aria. She likes crafting and baking and also enjoys spending time with her niece and nephews, who always bring a smile to her face.

  • Holly Heible Senior Scheduling & Resource Coordinator

    Holly Heible is the Senior Scheduling Coordinator for ECS.  She received a bachelor’s degree from Davenport University and has been with the company since 2004.  She completes the physician and APP schedules for all ECS sites, making sure our emergency rooms are staffed appropriately.  When she’s not scheduling for ECS, Holly enjoys spending time with her two children.

  • Keri Ann Kelly Senior Accountant

    Keri Ann graduated from Central Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus in accounting and finance, and then later graduated from Wayne State University with an Master of Business Administration. She has over 20 years of corporate accounting experience in various industries. She started working at ECS in 2018 as Senior Accountant and her responsibilities include monthly journal entries, account analysis and financial statement preparation for the various companies under the ECS umbrella, as well as intercompany transactions, monthly invoicing for various companies and special projects.  She recently relocated back to Michigan, after living in Ohio for 12 years.  In her spare time, Keri Ann enjoys spending time with her son and daughter, cooking, baking, reading and house projects.

  • Denise Edgecomb Executive Assistant

    Denise Edgecomb grew up in West Michigan and graduated from Western Michigan University in 1990. After graduating from WMU, Denise started working in the marketing department of a paper product company in Kalamazoo. She then moved back to Grand Rapids and started working for Spectrum Health. While at Spectrum Health, Denise held various positions including Human Resources Assistant, Health & Disabilities Management Assistant, Administrative Assistant and Executive Assistant. In January 2016 she started working for Emergency Care Specialists as their Executive Assistant. A job that she truly enjoys. In her free time Denise likes spending time with her husband, two children and their two dogs.

  • Kristi Pazik General Accountant

    Kristi is a General Accountant for ECS.  She received her Bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University and has been with the company since 2014.   Kristi brings 20+ years of experience in the field.  She is responsible for payroll and accounts receivable for Medical Management Specialists and Helix Scribe Solutions.  She also handles the accounts payable for all ECS-owned companies, as well as expense reimbursements for staff. In her spare time, Kristi loves to read, travel the open road on motorcycles and spend time with her husband, three children, and many farm animals.
