Emergency Care Specialists - Observation Medicine Fellowship

The Observation Medicine Fellowship is a one-year, non-ACGME accredited program. Applicants must be ABEM or AOBEM board-certified or board-eligible emergency medicine physicians in order to apply.

Emergency Care Specialists, P.C., is a physician-owned, independent group of emergency medicine providers with over 250 physicians and advanced practice providers.  ECS is built on a culture of service, and has demonstrated continual growth and expertise across the continuum of acute care for over 35  years. ECS staffs multiple Spectrum Health emergency departments, with a combined volume of more than 350,000 annual visits.

A fellowship in observation medicine prepares emergency physicians to lead clinical care, quality improvement and clinical operations outside of the emergency phase of care. The specialty of observation medicine is growing as a solution to improve patient throughput and provide efficient use of health care resources by developing effective patient flow processes and evidence-based clinical protocols. Physicians who complete an observation medicine fellowship will be well prepared for both clinical and administrative leadership.

Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital is a tertiary referral center located in downtown Grand Rapids. Butterworth Hospital is a Level 1 Trauma Center with more than 110,000 emergency department visits annually.  Butterworth Hospital earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Heart-Check mark for Advanced Certification for Comprehensive Stroke Centers. Additionally, Butterworth Hospital has a 25-bed dedicated observation unit. The observation unit has been operating for over 14 years, has an average census of 500-600 visits per month and has an average length of stay less than 17 hours.

ECS offers compensation packages based on nationally competitive rates.
